Pakistan - STATES OF UNDRESS
In premiere episode, “States of Undress” explores Pakistan’s multifaceted fashion scene
In Pakistan, Karachi Fashion Week provides a kind of sanctuary, but outside its bubble Hailey Gates finds the forces working to eradicate the progressive culture it represents.
Vice’s new 24-hour cable TV channel Viceland, which launched February 29, has released online the premiere of their new fashion and travel series, States of Undress, before it airs on the network on March 30. The series follows host Hailey Gates as she explores fashion scenes across the world, confronting issues the fashion industry ignores and “investigating what the rest of the world is wearing, and why.”
The first episode brings Gates to Pakistan, where she meets progressive designers at Karachi Fashion week and learns about the vibrant colors and outfits characteristic of the country’s small but active fashion scene. She also explores the more limited clothing options available to women in more conservative areas of the country, talks about the role of women in society with a conservative imam, and meets with female victims of acid attacks who were targeted for their fashion choices.
