The Unfinished War
1998
There is no place on earth more likely to trigger a nuclear war than the disputed Himalayan territory of Kashmir. That was the view of America’s intelligence agency, the CIA in May 1998, after atomic tests transformed India and Pakistan into nations armed with nuclear bombs.
Shortly after gaining independence from British rule, India and Pakistan fought over Kashmir. Both nations claim the territory is rightfully theirs. A confrontation that began fifty years ago continues remains unresolved today.
Phil Rees traveled the frontier dividing the two nations and gained unique access to the front lines of the remotest battlefield on earth. He explored why these two nations are in seemingly perpetual conflict – a conflict that some fear could escalate into nuclear war.
The Financial Times described it as a "fascinating" documentary (28.11.98) which on to win a Silver Nymph at the Monte Carlo Television Festival.
